Dogs Inc Opens Lakewood Ranch Visitor Center, Bringing Its Life-Changing Mission Closer to Home

The new Stephen & Lisa Hyde Visitor Center invites neighbors to learn about guide and service dogs and discover ways to support their training.

Lakewood Ranch residents have a new place to learn how a carefully trained dog can help someone navigate daily life with greater independence.

Dogs Inc has opened The Stephen & Lisa Hyde Dogs Inc Visitor Center at 5815 Lakewood Ranch Boulevard. The nonprofit celebrated a ribbon cutting on October 22, followed by a public grand opening on October 24. The center gives neighbors, prospective volunteers and people interested in its programs a dedicated place to connect with the organization. East County Observer | Manatee Chamber announcement

A closer look at the work behind the dogs

Many residents may remember Dogs Inc by its former name, Southeastern Guide Dogs. The nonprofit breeds, raises and trains working dogs for people with vision loss, veterans with disabilities and others served by its programs. Its work extends beyond matching a dog with a recipient: it also provides training and ongoing support. Dogs, training and alumni support are provided at no cost to recipients, with help from donors and volunteers. Dogs Inc | Program information

At the new center, visitors can explore an interactive Discovery Zone and learn about the skills these dogs develop. Scheduled activities include demonstrations, conversations with graduates, puppy-raising information sessions and opportunities to speak with instructors. A gift shop supports the organization’s mission, and families can look for children’s reading activities with ambassador dogs. Check the event schedule before visiting, as activities vary. Local generosity helped make it possible

The center bears the names of longtime Lakewood Ranch residents Stephen and Lisa Hyde, whose support helped bring the project to life. The East County Observer reported that the couple provided a $1.25 million matching grant for the facility. East County Observer

The new location offers potential donors, puppy raisers and program applicants a nearby place to ask questions and get involved. It also provides a meeting and support location for local puppy-raising volunteers.

Dogs Inc CEO Veronica Thames told SRQ Daily that the center is intended to extend the organization’s community reach and that visitors can stop in without an appointment. SRQ Daily

Plan a visit

The center focuses on education, outreach and connections to Dogs Inc’s programs. Visitors should leave personal pets at home; guide and service dogs are welcome, according to ABC7’s visitor guidance.
