Lakewood Ranch Aquatics Center Nears Opening as $44.2 Million Recreation Hub Takes Shape
Lakewood Ranch, FL – For years, competitive swimmers, pickleball players, and fitness enthusiasts living in Lakewood Ranch have faced a common challenge: many of the region’s top recreational facilities have required a drive to western Manatee County or Sarasota.
That is about to change.
Construction continues on the new Athletics & Aquatics Center at Premier Sports Campus North in Lakewood Ranch, a $44.2 million project that county officials expect to open in September 2026. Once complete, the facility will become one of the largest public recreation investments ever made in East Manatee County and could dramatically expand opportunities for residents seeking swimming, fitness, therapy, and pickleball amenities close to home.
Located at 16350 Rangeland Parkway adjacent to the Lakewood Ranch Library, the new 44,000-square-foot complex is designed to serve both residents and regional sports tourism while complementing the existing Premier Sports Campus South, which already attracts national and international athletic competitions.
What Will Be Included?
The Athletics & Aquatics Center will feature:
- Olympic-size 50-meter competition swimming pool
- Dedicated therapy pool
- Locker rooms and restrooms
- Administrative offices
- Geothermal infrastructure yard
- Walking trails
- Approximately 166 parking spaces
- 24 pickleball courts
- 14 covered pickleball courts for year-round play
The facility was specifically designed to address growing demand for aquatic recreation and pickleball in East Manatee County, two amenities local residents have consistently requested as Lakewood Ranch continues its rapid expansion.
A Major Win For Local Swimmers
Perhaps the most significant feature is the 50-meter competition pool.
Today, many East County swim programs must compete for limited lane space at smaller facilities or travel significant distances for long-course training opportunities. The new pool is expected to become the first public long-course competition facility of its kind in the area.
Local swim organizations, including the Lakewood Ranch Swim Association Lightning and Sarasota Tsunami, have already expressed interest in utilizing the facility once it opens. Coaches believe the addition could help local athletes train closer to home while attracting larger swim meets to the region.
The facility is also expected to create opportunities for:
- Youth swim teams
- High school swim programs
- Masters swimming
- Swim lessons
- Aquatic fitness classes
- Regional swim competitions
For many families, the project represents an end to years of driving across county lines for pool access.
Pickleball Continues Its Explosive Growth
While the swimming facilities may grab headlines, pickleball could become one of the center’s biggest attractions.
The project includes 24 courts, including 14 covered courts designed to provide shade during Florida’s hottest months. County leaders have emphasized that resident access will remain the priority even as tournament opportunities are explored.
Demand for public pickleball facilities has surged throughout Southwest Florida, with many existing courts operating at or near capacity during peak hours.
The addition of nearly two dozen courts in Lakewood Ranch could significantly relieve pressure on existing facilities while creating new opportunities for leagues, clinics, tournaments, and casual play.
Expected Opening Date
The project has experienced several design revisions over the years, but construction formally began in early 2025.
Current county timelines point toward a September 2026 opening, with September 2, 2026 frequently cited as the projected completion date. Construction remains active and county officials have indicated the project is progressing toward that target.
What Will Memberships Cost?
Manatee County has not yet released official membership pricing specifically for the new Athletics & Aquatics Center.
However, county officials have confirmed the facility will participate in reciprocal membership programs with G.T. Bray Recreation Center and John Marble Recreation Center. Current county recreation memberships include:
- Recreation Membership: $25 per month
- Recreation Plus Membership: $35 per month
The Recreation Plus level currently includes amenities such as group fitness programming and pickleball access at participating county facilities. While final pricing for the Aquatics Center has not yet been announced, many residents expect rates to remain generally consistent with the county’s existing recreation membership structure.
More Than A Pool
The new facility represents something larger than recreation alone.
It is part of a broader transformation occurring around Premier Sports Campus North, which now includes the Lakewood Ranch Library, future government facilities, nearby schools, and expanding residential development throughout East Manatee County.
Together, these investments are helping establish Lakewood Ranch as a self-contained destination where residents can live, work, learn, compete, and recreate without leaving the community.
As construction progresses toward its anticipated September opening, the Athletics & Aquatics Center appears poised to become one of the most heavily utilized public facilities in the region.
For swimmers, pickleball players, families, and fitness enthusiasts, the wait may finally be coming to an end.
