Port St. Lucie Moves Closer to Landing Long-Awaited Costco as Southern Grove Development Accelerates
One of the most requested retailers in Port St. Lucie could soon become a reality. City leaders have taken a major step toward bringing a new warehouse store from Costco Wholesale to the fast-growing Southern Grove area, marking a significant milestone for retail development along Florida’s Treasure Coast.
Officials in Port St. Lucie recently approved a purchase and sale agreement that would allow the retailer to acquire land within the Southern Grove jobs corridor, clearing the way for a potential new warehouse store and gas station.
For many residents, the move represents progress on a project that has been requested for years.
Proposed Costco Location in Southern Grove
The proposed Costco store would be built on approximately 22.8 acres in the Southern Grove area, located west of Interstate 95 and near major transportation routes serving the rapidly expanding community.
Plans call for a 170,000-square-foot warehouse store, a typical size for Costco locations, along with a fuel station and large parking area designed to accommodate heavy customer traffic.
City leaders say the location makes sense because of its accessibility and the amount of growth already occurring in the corridor.
“This is something our residents have asked for again and again,” said Shannon Martin. “As our city continues to grow, retailers are recognizing the opportunity here.”
Residents Have Requested Costco for Years
City officials say Costco has consistently ranked among the top retail requests from residents.
Currently, many shoppers drive to nearby cities such as Stuart, Florida or West Palm Beach to visit the popular warehouse retailer.
Bringing a location to Port St. Lucie would provide local access for thousands of households across the Treasure Coast.
“People are excited about the possibility of having a Costco right here in our city,” Mayor Martin said. “It’s a brand residents recognize and have been asking us to bring for a long time.”
Part of a Larger Costco Presence in the Region
The proposed retail store would also complement a major Costco distribution center currently under development in Port St. Lucie, which is expected to support dozens of Costco stores throughout Florida.
The logistics facility is projected to employ hundreds of workers once fully operational, further strengthening the city’s role as a regional distribution hub.
Economic development officials believe the combination of distribution and retail investment could help attract additional businesses to the area.
“This is exactly the type of project we envisioned when we began developing Southern Grove as a jobs corridor,” Martin said. “It’s about bringing employment opportunities and amenities to our residents.”

Southern Grove Driving Economic Growth
Southern Grove has quickly emerged as one of the most active development zones in Port St. Lucie.
Located near Interstate 95, the district was designed to support large-scale employment centers, including warehouses, distribution facilities, and commercial development.
City leaders believe a Costco warehouse could help anchor additional restaurants, retail stores, and service businesses nearby.
Florida Population Growth Attracting Retail Investment
Florida continues to experience strong population growth, particularly in regions such as the Treasure Coast and Central Florida. As more residents relocate to the state, national retailers are increasingly expanding into fast-growing communities.
Port St. Lucie has become one of the fastest-growing cities in Florida, making it an increasingly attractive market for major brands looking to establish new locations.
“Our population growth and rising incomes are making Port St. Lucie an attractive market for national retailers,” Martin said. “Projects like this show how far our city has come.”
If the project moves forward, the new Costco would represent one of the most significant retail additions to the city in years—bringing one of America’s most popular warehouse retailers closer to residents across the Treasure Coast.
